If
you're like me, when you think of brewing Beer, massive copper-like
containers and guys in long white coats with clipboards scampering
up and down tall ladders come to mind. But the truth is, making
a quality home brew has never been easier.
Today's Microbrew Kits usually make about two gallons of
beer. Proper fermentation takes anywhere from two weeks to
six months, depending on the type of beer you are making.
A typical Home Microbrew Kit comes with a Brew Keg and a
"brew pack" of hops and malts. Also included are
"Boosters", the sugar additives that add the alcohol.
Reusable plastic caps for the Brew Keg and, of course, instructions
round out your kit.
There are dozens of possibilities when making your favorite
microbrew. Options include Pilsners, Stouts, Lagers, Light
Beers and fruit based ales. Some Microbrew kits have seasonal
offerings as well---winter ales and even pumpkin stouts in
the autumn months. Prices run from around $40.00 for a basic
beginner set up to up to $150.00 for the more advanced brewer.
One of the most critical ingredients in making a quality
microbrew is often overlooked--water. Most tap waters are
OK to use. But if your municipality uses high chlorine levels
(you can smell it easily if they do), you can boil your water
or store it overnight refrigerated in an open container. This
allows the water to "breathe" and let the chlorophyll
out.
Another key ingredient in the Home Microbrew Kit is the
Hops. These are the grains that add the flavor to your beer.
The key here is freshness. The best way to keep your hops
fresh is to wrap them tightly and freeze them as soon as you
can.
Another important thing is some discipline. You can't "peek"
once you have combined your ingredients, closed off your keg
and begun the brewing process. Opening up the keg prematurely
may cause bacteria to enter your batch, which will ruin it.
If you can't help yourself and need to see what's cooking,
hold up a flashlight to the keg in a dark room. You should
see a silhouette of foam and bubbles. Always remember to trust
the microbrew kit instructions and don't rush it!
A fun alternative for the entire family is the Home Microbrew
Kit for Root Beer and Birch Beer. It also comes with everything
you need to make your favorite Root or Birch Beer. The fermentation
process for these beverages is about three days.
"Making your own" is really a lot of fun and not
a lot of work---and no long white coat and clipboard are required!
